And another note, John Lasseter is not to blame. He’s been trying to save the form, but the share holders at Disney believe that 2D animation = weak story which to them = less profit. So they tied Lasseter’s hands and forced him to make the decision. But the executives aren’t the only ones we should convince. We have to convince the on going public that 2D animation is still just as important and entertaining as CGI films.

Sadly, part of the problem why the last 2D films, “Princess and the Frog” and “Winnie the Pooh” didn’t do well because there’s a prejudice that most on going audiences actually believe that 2D animation is just “kids stuff”. And any one who loves those movies and is a fan of animation can tell you that its not true. Animated films shouldn’t be judged just because of looks alone, but the worlds and characters that they create that makes us fall in love with them. CGI can only do so much. As Don Bluth said himself, while CGI animation is impressive, its more like puppeteering than animation. As it can’t really capture the magic of the genre as traditional pencil work can.

So if you grew up with Disney, love Disney’s animation, and/or appreciate all forms of animation as a fan, student, expert or aspiring artist. Show them that 2D animation will not be tossed aside just for profits!

Well… Lasseter hasn’t gone stupid after all. I feel bad now.

The stories of PatF and Pooh didn’t help the case against the whole “kids stuff” thing, either. They need to make hand-drawn films with stories that look appealing to everyone at first glance. That’s how The Simpsons Movie was such a success despite being hand-drawn. So give them stories like Pixar films or Wreck-It Ralph had. Give it a non-kiddie title. Give it a stereoscopic 3D touch like the Lion King or Beauty and the Beast re-releases. I don’t care what it takes to make people see it. We just want hand-drawn back in theaters.

There’s nothing wrong with CG animation, but hand-drawn films can be just as successful if given the chance.
